Meet Your Speech Therapist
Katie Kaufmann, M.A., CCC-SLP
Owner, Speech Therapist, Certified BFR Reading & Dyslexia Specialist
Hello! I became a Speech Therapist and Reading Specialist because I love working with children and seeing them grow and blossom with progress in two essential skills: communication and reading. Here’s a little bit about me:
After graduating from the University of Michigan, I took post-bachelor’s program for Speech & Language at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. After completing my much anticipated out west journey, I returned home and attended Michigan State’s Communicative Sciences and Disorders program to receive a Master’s Degree to practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist. I’ve worked in a school in rural Indiana, as well as in schools as a contracted therapist in different areas of Detroit and the surrounding cities. Throughout my career, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with children with a wide array of impairments and disabilities in clinical settings as well, including in-person and online sessions (tele-therapy).
In addition to pediatrics, I also have experience working in long term care facilities collaborating with nursing staff and adult patients in Detroit, targeting patients’ cognition, communication and swallowing deficits following medical complications. After having this wide array of experiences, I decided that working with children is my passion. More specifically, seeing children struggle with reading and communication in school and clinical settings is what has brought me to where I am today. I feel we can be doing more for our students at young ages to target individual needs and provide them with the repeated practice they deserve before moving on to more advanced lessons. I have invested my energy and effort in learning more about the red flags for dyslexia, speech-language impairments, and autism that we can use to better deliver individualized speech therapy and reading intervention services to our children.
I also have 3 boys of my own, one of whom is diagnosed with auditory and visual dyslexia. It has been a journey, a very challenging journey at times, but we got there! He’s reading at grade level in 3rd grade! I have navigated this journey as a parent, and as a professional, collaborating with other parents and professionals along the way. Sharing in these very important experiences has given me so many tools and tips to help others in their journey.
Opening Sunflower Speech & Reading LLC has allowed me to support children with two of the most basic and important skills: communication and reading. Our children deserve to be proficient and acquire skills to their full potential when it comes to speech, language and literacy. Let’s work together to give our kids what they deserve.
