Our Approach
Early Speech & Language impairments and delays are often red flags for dyslexia or other difficulties with reading. My approach allows us to identify these red flags in reading early, if appropriate, and prevent your child from falling behind (or falling further behind) in their reading skills.
Individualized assessment
Parent coaching
Therapy plan
Home programming
Evaluations
We offer comprehensive evaluations that will identify the following:
Speech/Language Impairments
Articulation impairment
Expressive/Receptive Language Impairment
Apraxia
Screening for Dyslexia (auditory or visual)
Screening for Autism
Results from an evaluation will give you specific information about your child’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas of speech, language and reading. Speech evaluations include standardized assessment (having your child name pictures and talk about provided short stories), as well as informal assessments (describing pictures, answering questions, playing games). Speech evaluations will also include parent input. Language evaluations also include standardized assessment (talking about pictures, identifying pictures that are similar, repeating verbal sentences), as well as informal assessment (answering questions about a story, identifying antonyms/synonyms, and describing routines or a provided image.
Reading assessments include your child being assessed on his/her ability to name/identify letters and letter sounds as well as read simple to complex words, and some non-words (words that your child hasn’t seen before), in order to assess their ability to decode according to the spelling patterns and rules we use to read.
You’ll be provided a full written report with evaluation results, containing ways to use your child’s strengths and weaknesses during everyday interactions to improve communication and reading skills. Evaluation results will also provide the groundwork for creating specific therapy goals and help to create a therapy plan for your child, which may include home programming. Home programming is not required, but research does show that additional practice results in faster progress.
Speech (Articulation) Therapy
During speech therapy sessions, we will do a variety of activities such as play games, read books, and sing songs that will help your child to use and practice his/her target sounds. These are the sounds that were identified, during the evaluation, as errored sounds no longer appropriate for your child’s age.
Sunflower Speech & Reading, LLC will use your child’s interests, hobbies and preferred activities during therapy sessions in order to increase engagement and his/her love of learning.
Language Therapy
Language therapy sessions will depend on your child’s interests and preferred activities. For example, if your child loves trains, we can incorporate toy trains, books about trains and train activities in order to keep your child’s interest and engagement high throughout sessions.
Common Target Goals in Language Therapy:
Increase vocabulary and put more words together in sentences.
Help to follow directions and understand what is being said.
Produce sentences with words in the correct order.
Reading Instruction to Treat Dyslexic Children & Struggling Readers
Contrary to what has been taught in many schools for decades, most children need direct and cumulative reading instruction in order to become proficient readers. Sunflower reading services utilizes the Brain Friendly Reading program and include:
Explicit instruction and ample practice with letter/sound relationships, decoding and spelling single words, and eventually reading sentences and books.
Engaging activities to increase accuracy and fluency.
Home programming to fit your needs, including games and materials to utilize for additional practice.
